I doubt that we are any weirder than others.
Just different people from different areas
do different things for fun and sport.
What some Mainers do by season:
Winter: Belt Sander Racing (2:04)
Spring: Maine Mud Runs (2:49)
Summer: Lobster Boat Racing (3:03)
Fall: Giant Pumpkin Regatta (no good video worth sharing)

Actually, this video of the Pumpkin Regatta is pretty funny, if not particularly fast-paced. Man, those pumpkins sure make funny boats...!
